Thoughts about Freedom and Yoga Practice

External freedom is about doing what you want when you want.
But what good is external freedom if the psyche is out of control and emotions such as anger, frustration and thoughts of lack or negativity are running the show on the inside? This will still bring misery. Real freedom is about mastering your inner world and not letting it be the other way round.
Learning to discipline your life and take charge of your inner psyche, not the other way round, is a much happier freedom, and essentially a much happier life.

Victor Franklin said it beautifully “the ultimate freedom is a man’s right to choose his attitude”.

Developing a discipline for spiritual practice, and sticking to it daily, is a sure way to let your mind know that YOU are in charge and not the other way round.

Why a daily practice? Let me answer this with two questions here:

  1. Do you think your teeth stay healthy if you only clean them 2 times a week?

  2. Do you think your body is healthy and strong if you choose once or twice a week to eat fresh greens and fruit while all the other days you eat “junk food”?

Does the word discipline sound like something rigid, that someone or a system wants to put onto you? Looking and experiencing discipline as a force that comes from within us lets us see that it is a strength that gives clarity of thought and feeling and that let’s us distinguish between feelings and emotions.
