Why do you want to do Yoga?

Have you ever asked yourself why you want to do you, or why you have started doing yoga? Mostly you will say “I feel better after .I have done Yoga” which is of course a good reason. Everyone wants to feel better, be a bit happier or at least live a bit more pain-free and a bit more stress-free.
You could also do some gymnastic practices, go to the physio, go for a walk in nature, call a friend - all these things might make you feel better and improve your “wellbeing”. (please click on the link of “wellbeing” as I think it is important to know what wellbeing involves; as in the article point 1)

If you have started a daily yoga practice, a sadhana, which might consist of asanas (Yoga postures or movements), Pranayama (breathing practices), meditation and Yoga Nidra (deep relaxation), mantra chanting or meditation or one of those - ask yourself what made me start doing this practice, what is it that keeps me going with this practice?

My starting point was a very stressful time when studying pharmacy - long days, the first time having my own household and over 20 subjects to study each week. My mind was going wild, there were too many things to think about that when I took time to go for a walk in nature I wasn’t even aware where I was because my thoughts consumed me. I also had a lot of questions about health, total health, that non of my professors could give me answers to. … and then I met my yoga teacher….. and I started to learn to be aware of my body and sensations in the body, my breath and I also started to learn to observe my mind rather than being “pushed around” by it. This of course had an effect in every day life. I realised that the daily yoga practice - the sadhana my yoga teacher put together for me and which I started practicing daily no matter what- had a direct effect on my energy levels which were higher than before, I was less reactive in my responses to stresses or to triggers (eg from my family, like every young person has) and the world was a brighter place in general as I found a way to feel at home in the core of myself (my Self) - I wasn’t so much depended anymore of the “perfect or fair” world around me.

No, that is not me when I was younger, but I felt like that after I met my yoga teacher and she gave me my daily yoga practice programme, my sadhana.
